Published: March 9, 2008 OIL REVENUE FROM IRAQI OIL ENDS UP IN NON-IRAQI BANKS (for the last 5 years) Two senior members of the Senate Armed Services Committee have requested a full accounting of how Iraq is spending its soaring oil revenue..., The request, sent Friday to David M. Walker, the top official at the United States Government Accountability Office, estimates that Iraqi oil revenue could skyrocket above $56 billion in 2008, largely because of the rising price of oil.... As a result, the letter from the Armed Services Committee says, "we believe that it has been overwhelmingly U.S. taxpayer money that has funded Iraq reconstruction over the last five years, despite Iraq earning billions of dollars in oil revenue over that time period that have ended up in non-Iraqi banks (for the last 5 years)." LAS VEGAS SUN (September 17, 2007) One of the first presidential candidates - on either side of the aisle - to publicly speak out against the economic distress of the subprime mortgage crisis, Obama put out a statement in September laying out his plans to aid those in distress due to the sub-prime loan crisis. He wanted to implement a government relief fund, change bankruptcy law and offer a new tax credit on mortgage interest for those that don't itemize or simply aren't able to deduct their interest payments from their tax returns. On Sept. 17, 2007, Obama appeared at the NASDAQ MarketSite to make a speech about the rising foreclosures amongst subprime mortgages. Obama likened the crisis to Enron and asked that Wall Street make "shared sacrifices" to avoid the same type of "crisis in confidence" that Enron produced. He urged the government, who had not yet agreed upon a solution, to investigate lender-client relationships and help borrowers come out from under their mortgages. His plan to aid subprime borrowers is hinged on his overall economical plan to simplify America's tax code and close the loopholes that corporations enjoy under the current tax code; shifting the burden from the middle class. Bush and Republicans' failed policies May 9, 2008 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation to let a federal agency insure up to $300 billion in mortgages to help homeowners avert foreclosure, a day after the White House threatened to veto the measure. The House voted 266-154 yesterday (May 8, 2008) to approve the housing package offered by Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank. The plan would allow the Federal Housing Administration to insure refinanced mortgages after loan holders agree to cut principal to make payments affordable. "We're in a recession and a major cause of that recession is the subprime crisis,'' Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said on the House floor before the vote. "We do not see any alternatives to this bill." Democrats in Congress are at odds with Republican lawmakers and the Bush administration over efforts to stem foreclosures amid the worst housing slump in a quarter century. The White House favors a voluntary, industry-led program to modify loan terms and this week issued a veto threat against Frank's bill. Republicans oppose using government funds, saying that would reward lenders and investors who acted recklessly and is unfair to homeowners who are keeping up with mortgage payments. Democrats including Frank say government funding is needed to preserve neighborhoods and help homeowners who were steered into loans they couldn't afford. A vast majority of Americans "are now going to assume responsibility for ill-advised financial decisions and misjudgments of other people,'' said Representative Spencer Bachus of Alabama, the top Republican on the House Financial Services Committee, on the House floor before yesterday's vote. Bernanke Support Frank's FHA proposal would cost $2.7 billion and help about 500,000 homeowners, according to a Congressional Budget Office estimate. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke indicated support for the plan during a May 5 speech without explicitly endorsing it. The Democrats' housing package also would expand the FHA's role in insuring mortgages and strengthen oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-chartered companies that are the biggest sources of money for U.S. mortgages. It includes a provision that would shield loan-servicing companies that modify mortgages from investor lawsuits. It looks like Bush is adamantly opposed to the new bankruptcy bill that will save American homeowners and it is no surprise. The Bush administration is failing the American people is every which way, shape and form. Their interests are with the lenders and banks. Their Hope Now buddies, banks and servicers. Their pals that hold the gold and money. Not the poor, suffering, American people that are losing their homes because of these banks poor lending practices and predatory lending ways of offering these mortgages to borrowers. Republican Opposition New York Times (May 9, 2008) President Bush sided with banks and mortgage lenders on Tuesday, threatening to veto a bill being offered by Senate Democrats that would give more bargaining power to homeowners who face foreclosure. Opening what is likely to be an intense political battle in the deepening mortgage crisis, the White House said it strongly opposed the bill, which would let bankruptcy court judges modify the terms of a mortgage as part of the restructuring of a debt in a bankruptcy filing. The facts are that Bush and his administration are more concerned about foreign policy and Iraq than with it’s domestic policy and the American people. IN THE NEWS...The Democratic majority in Congress has been fighting since September 2007 to get more uninsured children covered by health insurance. The additional funding provided by the CHIP BILL would lead to a substantial reduction in the number of uninsured children. As currently approved, the Senate bill would cut the nation's rolls of uninsured children—estimated at more than 9 million—by about 4 million, a 44 percent drop. The House version, with a higher proposed funding level, would reduce the number of uninsured children by about 5 million, or 55 percent. ~click here~ to find the reduction of uninsured children in your state that Pres. WASHINGTON - 2/06/08 - Senate Republicans blocked a move by Democrats on Wednesday to add more than $40 billion in checks for the elderly, disabled veterans and the unemployed to a bill to stimulate the economy. The 58-41 vote fell just short of the 60 required to break a GOP filibuster and bring the Senate version of the stimulus bill closer to a final vote. The Senate measure was backed by Democrats but was strongly opposed by GOP leaders and President Bush, who objected to the add-ons. The vote left the $205 billion Senate stimulus bill in limbo. Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama of Illinois and Hillary Clinton of New York flew to Washington for the vote. GOP front-runner John McCain of Arizona did not vote. Republican leaders objected to add-ons such as a $14.5 billion unemployment extension for those whose benefits have run out, $1 billion in heating aid for the poor and tax breaks for renewable energy producers and coal companies. Republicans delivered their likely party’s nomination on Super Tuesday and they still support President Bush policies. It is obvious that Republicans are not willing to provide a new vision for the future that we so desperately need after the terrible blunders of the Bush Administration. Republicans offer nothing other than what amounts to a third Bush term on everything from Iraq, healthcare, judicial appointments, taxes, and more. We have endured a nightmare of unprecedented proportions for over the last 7 years under the Republican administration and we thought it couldn't get any worse, but we are now facing an economic depression due to runaway spending that we can't afford. China keeps buying our debt from the international markets. This means that China owns a large stake of our economy and the current Republican administration continues to allow imports from China without any apparent US government controls to stop China's sales into our country from pet food to toys that affect our children and a lot of other items that pose health hazards to our population. (thousands of products have been recalled, but no one is really sure of how many other items are getting through to consumers) Republicans seem to be committed to continue the war in Iraq and to expand hostilities to other parts of the world, increasing poverty levels and more hardship for the middle class, tax cuts for the wealthy, continued dependence on oil, no health insurance, no adjustments to the Medicare system and more madness. The 9 billion dollar question resurfaced (Feb. 2008) WASHINGTON (1/31/2005) political pundits (week ending February 8, 2008) reminded audiences about profiteering from the Iraq war (not a surprise), especially in light of the Bush administration's lack of accountability. Democratic lawmakers are concerned that profiteering may have achieved stratospheric dimensions in the case of the $9 billion that is still missing from the sale of Iraqi oil. This money was to have been used for humanitarian aid and reconstruction for Iraq. Where is the money people? This is 2008! We can stop the Republican incompetence at all levels in November. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspapers and add your voice to the vast majority of Americans who are suffering the effect of disastrous Republican policies.
